The South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON) was established in 2002. SAEON is a research platform funded by the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) and managed by the National Research Foundation (NRF). SAEON serves as a national platform for detecting, translating and predicting environmental change through scientifically designed observation systems and research.

Our network consists of 37 sites, 273 stations, 770 instruments, 1,465 sensors, 60 phenomena, 29 offerings, 31 units of measure, 142 variables, 1,502 datasets and 65,746,472 verified observations.
